In ancient Greek folklore, nymphs were immortal spirits of nature, typically bound to places and landforms. Little is known about how nymphs first entered our collective imagination. Perhaps a person stumbled across a forest glade, and was so overcome by its beauty that they could not help but recognise it had a soul, a will, a life of its own.
